The Tesla Institute is a premier academy that trains young time travelers called Rifters. Created by Nicola Tesla, the Institute seeks special individuals who can help preserve the time stream against those who try to alter it.

The Hollows is a rogue band of Rifters who tear through time with little care for the consequences. Armed with their own group of lost teens--their only desire to find Tesla and put an end to his corruption of the time stream.

Torn between them are Lex and Ember, two Rifters with no memories of their life before joining the time war.

When Lex’s girlfriend dies during a mission, the only way he can save her is to retrieve the Dox, a piece of tech which allows Rifters to re-enter their own timeline without collapsing the time stream. But the Dox is hidden deep within the Telsa Institute, which means Lex must go into the enemy camp. It’s there he meets Ember, and the past that was stolen from them both comes flooding back

Now armed with the truth of who they are, Lex and Ember must work together to save the future before the battle for time destroys them both…again.

Un roman steampunk atypique

Ce roman me faisait de l’œil depuis l'annonce de sa sortie, le steampunk est un genre que j'aime beaucoup et le synopsis me semblait plutôt pas mal du tout. Ayant reçu un bon cadeau de la part des auteurs, j'ai sauté sur l'occasion. Malheureusement j'en ressors un peu déçue, l'histoire est originale avec des voyageurs dans le temps (genre retour vers le futur). Mais le problème est que j'ai eu beaucoup de mal avec le vocabulaire et du coup à comprendre les éléments constitutifs du roman. Et quand on ajoute à cela des faits historiques, çà coince de plus belle.

En m'accrochant j'ai tout de même trouvé l'idée de base très sympa. On a deux points de vue, Lex et Ember. L'un est un hollow, une sorte de voleur qui voyage dans le temps, alors que l'autre est à l'institut Tesla (de l'inventeur du même nom). Ils viennent de deux camps opposés mais seront amenés à se rencontrer. Bon rien de bien original mais lorsque l'on apprend qui ils sont cela change un peu la donne. Ils sont tout les deux attachants, bien que j'ai une préférence pour Ember qui a moins la grosse tête.

Un roman plutôt complexe dans le vocabulaire et le genre, on ne sait jamais trop où l'on se situe géographiquement dans l'histoire et j'avoue que çà me perd. Je déconseille ce roman aux novices du VO. Néanmoins l'histoire vaut le détour mais ne me laissera pas un souvenir marquant.
